Piz Tomül - Safiental

A ski tour up Piz Tomül at the end of February. At 2946 m it is the highest point of the long ridge dividing the Safiental from the Valsertal, and a straightforward day out on skis.

The standard line starts at the Turrahus in Thalkirch (1694 m) and follows the broad back rising southwest past the wooden cross at P 2106 to the Rotflue, then round its north side to P 2589 and up the narrow southeast ridge to the top. Steady, pleasant gradient almost the whole way, with the Safiental opening up below.

The two things worth respecting are the steep summit slope and the east flank on the way down — both want settled snow. The alternative approach from Vals Platz is 1700 m and graded ZS-, and it is the longer, more avalanche-prone side, which is why almost everyone comes up from Safien.
