Stoos skiing

A day’s skiing at Stoos, the car-free village at 1300 m above Schwyz. The ski area sits on two mountains, Klingenstock and Fronalpstock, with the lifts topping out just under 1935 m.

Stoos is small and mostly intermediate: 35 km of pistes split into roughly 4 km easy, 24 km intermediate and 7 km difficult, served by eight lifts. The Klingenstock side is reached by a six-seater, the Fronalpstock side by two four-seaters. The terrain above the village is largely treeless, so the whole area is exposed and open, with the Vierwaldstättersee below.

The longest run is the Sunny piste, 3.5 km for 622 m of vertical; the steepest is the Franz Heinzer, 1.5 km and 400 m. Nothing skis down to the valley — every run finishes back in Stoos, and you take the funicular or the cable car down at the end of the day.

Approach

Train to Schwyz, then a bus to Schlattli (about 20 minutes), and the Stoosbahn funicular up to the village: 1738 m of track, 743 m of climb, gradients up to 110%, four to seven minutes. There is a large car park at the valley station.
