Calanques de Marseille

Rock climbing in the calanques on the Marseille side of the Côte d’Azur. Amazing white limestone. Thanks to Ben for the adventure.

Les Calanques, Marseille to Cassis / sea cliffs

Sport and trad / single pitch up to 250 m multi-pitch / Urgonian white limestone / ~2500 bolted and 1000+ trad routes across the massif

The Calanques run from the edge of Marseille east to Cassis, and the rock is Urgonian limestone — very white, very compact, with steep profiles where the climbing turns technical on small holds as soon as the grade rises. The massif splits into sectors like Marseilleveyre, Les Goudes, Sormiou, Morgiou and Luminy, and between them there are something like 2,500 bolted routes and over 1,000 trad lines, from single pitches to multi-pitch walls up to 250 m.

I did not write down which calanque or which route we climbed, so no grade here. November turned out to be a decent time to be there: the south-facing cliffs get sun, and the summer heat and crowds are long gone.

Logistics

Approach

Everything starts from Marseille, roughly 20 km west of the Cassis end of the massif. The sectors are reached on foot from road-end car parks; the area is a national park, so check current access and fire restrictions before going.
