Morschach bouldering

A day of bouldering at Morschach, on the granite blocks scattered in the forest above Lake Lucerne in canton Schwyz. Small area, short approach, and one of the first places around here to dry out in spring.

Fb 3b–8b, most problems Fb 6a–7c+ / granite

Morschach sits above the Vierwaldstättersee between Schwyz and Altdorf. The blocks are granite, spread through mixed forest on a west-facing slope at roughly 700 m. Sources count nine main blocks and somewhere above thirty problems, graded Fb 3b to 8b with the bulk sitting between Fb 6a and 7c+. Several of the harder lines were opened by Fred Nicole. There is at least one highball.

The landings are good almost everywhere and take pads well. West exposure means it needs dry weather; the area is usually snow-free early in the season.

Logistics

Approach

From Morschach village, up the Axensteinstrasse towards the Axenstein golf club. From Axenstein follow the Weg der Schweiz — the first worthwhile blocks are about five minutes along it. Parking at the meadow and forest edge is private; the usual solution is to drop gear, park down in the village and walk back up, about 20 minutes. There is a bus stop below the Axensteinstrasse turn-off.
