Sport Climbing - Orvin, Bernese Jura

Orvin is a small village at around 669 m in the Bernese Jura, a few kilometres north of Biel, sitting under the steep southern flank of the Chasseral chain. Above the houses the hillside is cut by bands of limestone scattered through the forest, and that is where the climbing is.

The rock here is compact Jura limestone, and the climbing has the character that comes with it: pocketed slabs, vertical walls broken by ledges, and a lot of friction footwork. The SAC tour portal lists around 140 routes spread over eight sectors, with wall heights between 22 and 65 m; the Filidor Schweiz Plaisir Jura guide counts more, describing fourteen sectors and roughly 170 routes of one to four pitches. Grades run from the low 3s up into the 7s, with the bulk of the routes sitting in the 5 and 6 range, so it is a plaisir area in the proper sense rather than a hard-sport crag.

Approach

The main path is the Sentier des Roches, which starts behind the retirement home and runs up under the Le Sentier sector. It is graded T3 and takes 15-30 minutes for about 150 m of ascent, depending on the sector. At around 910 m a branch left leads to Dalle de l’Y and Grande Dalle; at around 840 m a right-hand branch, marked with red lettering on a block, leads to Dalle du 8ème jour and Pizzeria, with a fixed rope on the way to the former. Parts of the path are exposed.
