Fliegender Teppich - Gerstenegg, Grimsel

Fliegender Teppich is a bolted slab route on the glacier-polished granite of Gerstenegg, on the west side of the Grimsel pass road above the Räterichsbodensee in the Bernese Alps. It starts at around 1600 m, a quarter of an hour’s walk from the parking below the dam.

Gerstenegg sits on the west side of the Grimsel pass road, above the Räterichsbodensee and below the Grimsel hydro installations, in the Haslital corner of the Bernese Alps. The rock is the glacier-polished granite the Grimsel is known for: long, clean, low-angle sheets with very little in the way of holds, so the climbing is mostly a matter of trusting rubber on rough stone rather than pulling on anything. The sectors here are among the friendlier introductions to Grimsel multi-pitch, with a lot of routes in the 3rd to 5th grade and short approaches from the road.

Approach

Park at the Gerstenegg power station area below the dam, at around point 1596 on the pass road near the Räterichsbodensee. From there it is about 15 minutes on a well-trodden path to the start. The area is also reachable by public transport on the Grimsel pass bus.
