Vals - Bad Conditions
Ice climbing in Vals, late February, bad conditions. That is the whole story of the day, and the reason there is not much else to write about it.
Vals, Valsertal, 1252 m / valley icefalls
No grade recorded - nothing was in condition on the day
Vals sits at 1252 m at the head of the Valsertal in Graubünden, up the road towards the Zervreila reservoir. Late February is late for this altitude, and it showed. We looked, we walked around, and the ice did not convince us.
I did not write down which fall we went for, so I am not going to invent a name or a grade for it. Bad conditions, an early drive home, and nothing lost - the valley is still there in a colder week.
Logistics
Approach
Drive to Vals village, then continue on the Zervreila road for whatever fall you are after. Standard winter caveat for this valley: it is all avalanche terrain, so check the bulletin and carry the kit.
