Campsut - Val Ferrera

Up the Val Ferrera to Campsut for a day of ice climbing. I did not write down which fall we did, so I will not pretend otherwise - just ice, in February, in the Avers.

Campsut, 1678 m / Averstal icefalls, W-SW facing

Crag range WI2-WI5+, M4-M9 / ca. 30 lines, 10-60 m / approach a few minutes from the road

Campsut sits at 1678 m in the Avers valley, some 30 km south of Thusis, and the falls are visible from the road. Parking is just outside the hamlet and the individual sectors are a few minutes’ walk across the field; the sunnier ones cost roughly fifteen minutes more. There are about thirty ice and mixed lines here, WI2 to WI5+ and M4 to M9, between 10 and 60 m.

Since I have no record of the route, the grade above is the crag’s range and not ours. Worth repeating what every source says about the place: a large icicle hangs some 80 m above the main wall and comes down more than once a winter. Nice, short, cold, and not somewhere to linger under the main wall.
