Trad Climbing Around the Three Shire Stone - Wrynose Pass, Lake District

Lake District trad climbing around the Three Shire Stone, at the top of Wrynose Pass. That is the whole of what I wrote down about the day, so there are no route names here.

Crags above the Three Shire Stone, Wrynose Pass, 393 m / Long Scar 545 m and Black Crag 580 m

Long Scar: single pitch, Mod upwards / Black Crag: VD to E5, routes up to about 20 m, andesite, SW-facing / approach 20 min from the pass

The Three Shire Stone stands at the pass summit, 393 m, where Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire used to meet. The parking there is the normal start for two crags: Long Scar, at about 545 m and twenty minutes up a good path, with clean single-pitch rock from Mod upwards; and Black Crag behind it at 580 m, southwest-facing andesite, short routes up to roughly 20 m across VD to E5. Both dry quickly.

I have no note of which lines we climbed, so the grades above are the crags’ ranges, not ours. Sound, rough volcanic rock, short routes, easy access.

Park at the Three Shire Stone at the top of Wrynose Pass; Long Scar and Black Crag are both about 20 minutes uphill on a good path.
