An evening of sport climbing at Lotniki — the group of rocks on Wzgórze Dumań at the far end of the Dolina Kobylańska — out with my sister and my brother-in-law, climbing by head-torch well after dark.

Lotniki is a long limestone wall at the northern end of the valley, with routes that are short and varied and nothing harder than VI.3+ — which is exactly what makes the sector such a good place to learn. For a lot of Kraków climbers in the 1980s, these unassuming rocks at the end of the Dolina Kobylańska were the first place they ever tied in.

After dark the crag becomes a different place: the wall shrinks to the circle of light in front of you and the next bolt.
