Cima Sud - Pizzo della Valletta
A summer day at the Gotthard, up to Cima Sud, the southern top of Pizzo della Valletta, straight from the pass. Short outing, no fuss, good views once past the lakes.
Pizzo della Valletta – Cima Sud, 2758 m / S summit from the Gotthard Pass
T4 (pathless) / Gear: sturdy boots, poles
A short pass to the summit and back, with the Valletta lakes below and the bulk of Pizzo Centrale filling the western skyline. Cima Sud sees fewer boots than the main top a little to the north, and it repays the detour with a cleaner view down into the valleys.
The going is pathless above the lakes: grass, then blocky terrain and easy scrambling on the final rise. Nothing sustained, but sure-footedness earns its keep on the loose sections near the top.
Logistics
Parking
At the Gotthard Pass (Passo del San Gottardo), roughly 2091 m, by the hospice. The pass road is open in summer; the postbus also stops here.
Approach
From the pass, head west/southwest into the Valletta di San Gottardo, past the Valletta lakes, then up toward the depression on the Fibbia–Valletta ridge and out to Cima Sud. Pathless terrain, so route-finding is on you.
