Czerwone Wierchy with my mum — Tatra hiking, and a very nice tour. Four broad grassy summits above 2000 m on the main ridge of the Western Tatras, walked in October.

Czerwone Wierchy, 2122 m (Krzesanica) / Main ridge traverse, Western Tatras

Marked hiking trails, one chained rock step in Kobylarzowy Żleb / four-summit round approx. 15–18 km and over 1100 m ascent, 8–9 h / limestone and dolomite, karst, grass and dwarf pine

The four tops are grassy domes rather than rock — Ciemniak 2096 m, Krzesanica 2122 m, Małołączniak 2096 m and Kopa Kondracka 2005 m — strung along the main Western Tatras ridge on the Polish–Slovak border. Underneath is limestone and dolomite, heavily karstified; Jaskinia Wielka Śnieżna, Poland’s longest and deepest cave, runs below the massif.

The name comes from Juncus trifidus, whose blades turn red in autumn, which is roughly when we were there. Nothing technical on the ridge itself in summer conditions, just long: the full four-summit traverse is quoted at 15–18 km, over 1100 m of ascent and 8–9 hours.

Logistics

Approach

From Kiry, up Dolina Kościeliska and on to Ciemniak, then along the ridge — the classic loop back via Przysłop Miętusi is given as 15.8 km and about 8 h 30 min. Kobylarzowy Żleb, on the Kościeliska variant, is the one steep spot: loose rubble and a 12 m rock step with a chain.
